Driving Course for the Mature Driver

11 Dec Blog | Comments

It’s not easy to admit to ourselves that perhaps we can’t see or hear quite as well as we did a few years ago. As we get older our bodies change in ways that make driving more challenging. Nobody wants to give up driving, so a driving course for the mature driver has been made available for anyone 55 years of age or older.

What content is offered in the course?

The main purpose of a mature driver course is first and foremost to improve your overall driving skills. Also included in the contents is a refresher course over general rules of the road, along with any new laws it may have been introduced recently.

There will also be instruction about the changes that come as we age, for example, memory, hearing, reaction time and vision. Understanding what those changes can be are important so that you can be aware of what changes are happening to your body. The course will also cover ways on how to deal with those changes, keeping you, your passengers and other vehicles around you safe.

Another newer concept that will be introduced is defensive driving. Although some people naturally drive defensively it is important to understand what it is and how to incorporate it into your current driving skills.

Reduced insurance rates

Many people 55 years of age and older are a little shocked to realize that their insurance rates can and do get increased, even if their record is clean. The statistics show that people aged 55 and older tend to get in more accidents due to vision, hearing and other health-related issues.

What many people do not know is that by taking a course for the mature driver some insurance companies will reduce a person’s insurance rates. Before taking a mature driving course make sure you call your insurance company to see if they will accept the course as a way to reduce your car insurance rates. Most insurance companies will reduce rates for up to three years after the successful completion of a mature driver course.

A factor that many people don’t consider are medications. As we get older we tend to need more medications to help our aging bodies function properly. The problem can be that some medications have side effects. Those side effects can include drowsiness or blurred vision both of which can affect your driving skills. The mature driver course will go over what to look for when taking a new medication.

Driving is a privilege that no one wants to give up, at any age. As we age we don’t have to necessarily give up driving we just have to be aware of what can change within our bodies. By being aware of the possibility of specific changes we can properly adjust how we drive to make sure we are continuing to be safe drivers. Understanding how a medication can affect our bodies and taking that medication long before we get behind the wheel allows us to properly judge whether we can drive on that medication are not. Getting older doesn’t necessarily have to mean giving up everything we enjoy it just means we have to be more cautious.
