My name is Steve Young and I am a retired California Highway Patrol Officer. I will also be your instructor in one of the online traffic courses with B Line Traffic Schools. No matter what course you sign up for, my goals are the same: Present you with the information that you need in a way that will not put you to sleep and then get you back to your life.  Throughout some of the courses I have included interesting situations, people and other random things I have come across in my 25+ years with the CHP to break things up a bit. Ok ok, enough about me. Close this window and start your course with B Line Traffic Schools today.

DMV – What services do they offer online?

12 Oct Blog | Comments

Most people know that DMV stands for the Department of Motor Vehicles. Most people also know that you can obtain your driver’s license, renew your plates and renew your driver’s license there. And people also know that odds are pretty good that doing anything at the DMV can take hours. What most people do not know is what can be done online instead of at the DMV. As we become more and more technologically advanced some things have become easier. This article will cover some of the things you can do online through the California DMV.

Make an Appointment before Going to a DMV Office

One of the most frustrating and annoying things about going to the DMV is the waiting. You walk in and have to wait to check in. Then they tell you where to go and you have to wait there. And usually, depending on what you need, once you tell them what you need you will have to wait again to complete that task.

Now you can go online and make an appointment for a driving-behind-the-wheel test or for most office visit appointments. Just check online, because there are lots of things you can do online now and there is no reason to set up an appointment for those things.

Get a Copy of Your Driver Record

If, for example, you recently completed a traffic school course because you received a speeding ticket, you could go online to obtain a copy of your driving record. You will want to ensure that the point(s) that you acquired from that traffic violation have been properly removed.

Be aware that this is not an “official” document but is a great way to see what, if anything is on your driving record.

Renew Your Vehicle Registration at the DMV

You have to do it every year. This is a great way to save yourself the trouble of taking off part of your workday to go, wait in a long line, to obtain something that should take 5 minutes. The only thing to be aware of here, is if you intend to submit a change of address within 10 days of renewing your registration. If you are it is suggested to mail in your renewal.

Driver’s License Renewal

This is pretty straight forward unless you are wanting to change the type of driver’s license you have. In that case you will need to go into the DMV. Or if you need to also change your address you will want to get that new address on your license and you will need to go into the DMV.

Submit a Change of Address

If you don’t have anything major coming up, like renewing your driver’s license or renewing your vehicle registration then there is no need to visit the DMV. Submitting your change of address online is super easy, so long as you already live within the state of California. If you are moving from out of state or live out of the country you will need to go into the DMV to show proof of your new California address.

There are lots of options now within the DMV. You can go into the DMV if you prefer, but now you can also do a lot of those things that take up so much time normally online. And with those services being available even if you have to go into the DMV the lines should be shorter and wait times less. So try to take advantage of the new online services when you can to save yourself sometime and save time for other folks who have to go into the DMV for whatever reason.
