Bicycle Helmets Save Lives

29 Jun Blog | Comments

Summer is here and for many, that means lots of bike rides to soak up the warm sun. Whether it’s just a casual, fun ride or a serious group of cyclists, the importance of wearing a helmet is invaluable.

Forming a new habit isn’t always easy. That was true when hockey helmets, football helmets and motorcycle helmet were made mandatory in the sporting arena and it’s true now of bicycle helmets. Each year, nearly 70,000 bicyclists suffer serious head injuries and many never fully recover. A broken bone can heal but a head injury can lead to a permanent disability or even death.

Of course, a helmet can’t keep you from falling but it can cut the chances of serious brain injury.  Researchers say that bicycle helmets can prevent three out of four serious cycling head injuries.

Similar to the helmet law for motorcycle riders, enacted in 1992, it is now the law in California that every rider or passenger on a bicycle under the age of 18 must wear a bicycle helmet.

Although bicycle helmets cost money, what they protect is priceless.  Your life and future are worth that cost.
