5 Reasons to get your CDL

28 Aug Blog | Comments

People hear the term CDL all the time, but do they really know what it is and why people get one? A CDL is a commercial driver’s license. People who need to have a CDL include, but are not limited to: truck drivers, bus drivers, shuttle drivers and limo drivers. Be aware this can vary from state to state, so check your DMV. Outside of needing a job why would someone want to get a CDL? Below is a list of 5 reasons to get your CDL:

  1. Love Driving – Most CDLs are obtained for a truck driving position. So if you love driving getting a CDL will allow you to get a position within a truck driving company. Most truck driving companies have local driving positions and cross country ones. Either way you would be driving a lot.
  2. Hate Boxes – Many people have personalities that are just not designed for the 9-to-5, working in a cubicle type job. There are many positions out there, after acquiring a CDL that allows a person to choose their hours. For example, if a person really likes to sleep in, but likes to stay up late being a limousine driver might be for them. Most limousines are driven in the evening into late-night hours.
  3. Make Good Money – If you are currently in a position that you are not happy with or that doesn’t offer health benefits than getting a CDL might be a good option. Most trucking companies can offer a person steady pay, health insurance and even the possibility of retirement options.
  4. College isn’t for you – Some are just are not interested in going to college. A four-year degree can be extremely expensive and requires another four years of school. Getting a CDL can allow a person to get to working quickly. If a person is wanting to become a truck driver the classes are reasonable and don’t take a lot of time. Depending on the company you’re looking to work for they may even offer a reimbursement program.
  5. Always Looking – Trucking companies are always looking to hire new drivers. They need drivers willing to work hard and who are willing to learn. A person who is willing to travel and doesn’t mind longer hours will have no problem finding work. There are also lots of opportunities for bus drivers, shuttle drivers and limo drivers.

The list above only gives you five reasons to get your CDL. There are many other reasons not listed. Getting your commercial driver’s license is one way to give yourself more options. For example, trucking companies require a CDL for driving many of their trucks. Depending on the weight of the truck and what is being carried CDL is required by law, in many states. Drivers with CDL’s usually make more money and get offered more opportunities. Having a CDL also allows you to work in other fields like, as a limo driver or a bus driver.
