Technology and Cars

03 Nov Blog | Comments

Cars, we all love driving them. They get us where we need to go. With all the advancements today there are some super cool new “toys” that are available on some cars. Many of those advancements are also safety tools that can prevent accidents.

One of those devices is a radar that is attached to the back of your car. The older version used to look for inanimate objects like: trees, boulders, etc… But how many times have we started to pull out of a parking spot and thought to look one more time and saw a car or a person that was not there a second ago. The newer version can watch for traffic that is coming while you are backing up. It will sound an alarm to notify you.

We all get trained to look both ways before we pull through a stop sign, especially at night, but sometimes even that is not enough to see people. If a person is in your blind spot, or is wearing dark clothing you may not see them.

In order to help with that issue there is a different kind of radar that has night vision to watch out for pedestrians. The job of this gadget is to look for and detect pedestrians in the area. The people that are found are then shown on display on the dashboard. What is also cool, is that it keeps track of those people as they move about showing you, when and if they get closer, or in direct line with your car.

The next “cool gadget” out there will allow your car to become a Wi-Fi hotspot. It requires a router to be attached to your car. It then uses the 3G network to give the car a signal while you drive. This would allow the passengers in the car to surf the web, send emails, or play games.

This fourth new toy could save many lives. One of the biggest reasons for car accidents involves drivers that are overly tired. There is a system, called Attention Assist, which learns a driver’s driving habits. It creates a baseline of how that person drives, so that if that person veers from that normal pattern, it lets the driver know.

Another device that could save lives is called the, Automatic high-beam control. How many of us have been driving down a road with little or no lights and have realized 3 miles in that you could have used your high-beams. Many folks have ended up hitting or have gotten hit by animals they couldn’t see coming out from the side of the road. The new technology out there will automatically put on your high-beams in those types of situations. It will also watch for traffic coming in either direction and turn them back off again when a vehicle approaches.

We are human and we make errors in judgment sometimes. By improving the technology we help take the human error element out of the picture more and more. As technology evolves we evolve with it. We learn to create new things that will improve our lives, make them safer or if we are really lucky the gadget does both.
