Choosing a Mature Driver Course

15 Nov Blog | Comments
Aging is a natural process which every individual will eventually face. There comes a time when mature drivers must deal with the effects of aging on their driving skills. However, this does not necessarily have to result in an elderly driver being forced to forfeit his or her license. If one is willing to complete a mature driver course, he or she can maintain a current license for many years to come. In addition, many insurance companies offer a safe driver discount of up to 15 percent for those who have successfully completed a traditional or online mature driver course.

Mature Driver’s Course Curriculum

There are numerous mature driver safety courses from which one can choose. Certain areas of the country use official courses, while others teach the material in various settings; however, most courses cover similar topics. Basic traffic rules are covered in almost all mature driver courses. Such courses also typically teach drivers about how emotional and physical health can impact one’s driving skills. In most courses, one will learn how to compensate for the sensory losses that often occur as people age, such as slower reaction times, vision changes and loss of hearing.

Knowing when the time has come to relinquish one’s car keys can be a delicate subject, and an initial denial of poor driving skills is a common reaction. The mature driver’s course will cover the warning signs that indicate that the time has come to give up the wheel.

Standard Traffic Skills

Traffic has increased steadily over the years, which can sometimes create challenging situations for drivers who learned their skills when roads were wide and inviting and bumper-to-bumper traffic was rare. A section of most mature driver courses will center around highway driving skills, such as maneuvering around big trucks, lane changing, and entering and exiting the highway. In addition, the course will provide tips on how to deal with aggressive drivers and other distractions, as well as how to properly utilize standard safety equipment.

Choosing the Most Suitable Driving Course

Courses can be found for drivers of all ages, therefore it is wise to sign up for a course that is specifically designed for mature drivers. Standard courses typically cover the most essential material in approximately six hours. However, those who find it difficult to sit for long periods of time may wish to select a mature driver course that can be started and stopped at any time.

In addition, mature drivers may enjoy being able to learn at their own pace, an advantage of online programs. Online courses often feature additional benefits as well, such as animated review sections, so students can listen to the material instead of reading from their computer screen.

The type of mature driver’s program in which one chooses to enroll will usually come down to his or her personal preference. However, it is wise for one to attempt to select the course that best suits his or her individual learning style.

There is a vast array of compelling reasons for enrolling in a mature driver’s program. Before one considers giving up his or her license, and the life changes in which such a step will result, he or she should enroll in a mature driver improvement course. It may seem like a big step; however, those who make such a commitment to the improvement of their driving skills, will quickly realize it was a worthwhile endeavor.
